Washington Capitals Visit in February 2003

Downtown Washington on the edge of Chinatown is currently going through a period of extensive modernisation. Evidence of this is clearly portrayed by the MCI Sports Centre - the home of the Washington Mystics ladies basketball team, the Washington Wizards mens basketball team and of course the Washington Capitals Ice Hockey team.  The MCI Centre was completed in 1997 and is easily accessible via the Gallery Place / Chinatown Metro station. Yvonne and I however chose to stay at the Red Roof Inn.

The Red Roof Inn is a perfect hotel for bargain hunters who don't wish to sacrifice comfort or convenience. Located in the heart of Chinatown and the new Downtown Business Improvement District, this modern high rise building is a welcomed departure from the no-frills variety of budget hotels. The Gallery Place Metro and the Smithsonian's National Museum of American Art are just 2 blocks away and the convention center is within 3 blocks. A surprising variety of new restaurants have moved into the neighborhood as well as theaters, art galleries and retail shops.

The guest rooms are modern and offer plenty of in-room amenities including irons/boards, phones with voice mail and data ports, coffee makers and hairdryers. The fitness center is equipped with a sauna and some guest rooms have jacuzzis.

Irish Channel, "The Irish Pub With Cajun Flair," serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. Operating hours are 7:00 am - 2:00 am. Restaurant hours however vary during off-season. This is a popular haven for Caps fans to meet up before and after the games.
