There was a good entry from Burnley and Nelson in the Lancashire Closed Championships played at Manchester on Saturday. Although Burnley entries outnumbered those of Nelson by 5 to 1, it was Nelsons Singles Champion Z. Kabrna who attracted a great deal of attention from the County officials.
For brilliant attacking play, his forty minute struggle with E. Eaton, of the Ashton League, will long be remembered by those who crowded round the table when they met in the fourth round. Eatons defence at times almost faultless, would have rattled many players of international standing on this showing, but Kab kept up his attacking policy till he hit through this defence and reached the next round after three gruelling games. It was Kabs misfortune to be called to face G. Pullar, of Oldham within seven minutes of this set, and the task against this fine young player was just beyond the Nelsonians capabilities after such a short rest, but it took Pullar thirty minutes and three games, fought at terrific speed, to gain the right to meet Ron Baker, of Manchester.
Both Gildea and Kabrna had a good run in the doubles reaching the fifth round.
