Preparations are well in hand for the visit of Manchesters international team whom Nelson meet in the Zone (7) Semi-final, Wilmott Cup Competition on Tuesday in the Co-operative Hall, Albert Street.
Manchester are taking no chances and are sending one of their strongest trios, Benny Casofsky and Ron Alcock, both full internationals, and Ronnie Baker, a brilliant all-round player, who has already made quite a name for himself in North of England table tennis circles and as a junior received international honours.
That Nelsons chances may appear slender against such an array of force no one will deny, but since the last meeting of these two sides only R. Pickles, who represented Nelson in that match when the opposition consisted of H. Lurie, B. Casofsky and E. Goodman, will be in the Nelson team, while B. Casofsky will be the only member of the visitors who played on that occasion.
Z. Kabrna will be in the No.1 berth for the home side and his all-attacking style will no doubt ensure that there will be three great games in store; while R. Pickles, will, no doubt, produce his best against this trio. The No.3 berth will be filled either by R. H. Carradice of the I. L. P., or C. Polyak, of St. Georges. The final selection will be made to-night when Nelson A entertain Blackpool in the return Division 2 (N.) fixture of the L. T. T. A.
There is no doubt that the seasiders will be out to avenge the 64 defeat which they suffered when they entertained Nelson in October last, but it will be a Nelson trio all out for the points to enable them to remain at the top of the table.
Tonights team will be Z. Kabrna, R. Pickles and R. H. Carradice, with the last two as the doubles pair.
Two good matches are in store for T.T. fans in less than a week.
